Lee Baker Obituary

Lee S. Baker, 90, of Edinburg, passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2022 at his home.

Lee was born on November 25, 1931, in Southfork Township, the son of Herman and Ola (Lee) Baker.

He married Joyce A. Hargis on January 18, 1953 at Sharpsburg United Methodist Church and she preceded him in death on December 21, 2020.

Lee was a farmer in Edinburg for 60+ years until his retirement. He enlisted in the US Air Force in January 1951 and served until transferring to the US Air National Guard in September 1952. He was honorably discharged in January 1954. Lee was a member of the Christian County Farm Bureau, American Legion, Masonic Lodge, and the Illinois Basketball Association. He was a timekeeper for the Edinburg Basketball for 57 years and was in ducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame as a Friend of Basketball in 1988. He was honored with the Lee Baker Edinburg Basketball Tournament in 1982 which still continues today.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joyce A. Baker; and his sister, Edith (Baker) Workman.

Lee is survived by his sons, Joe L. Baker of Edinburg, and Brian E. (wife, LiJun) Baker of Rochester; granddaughters, Amanda “Mandy” (husband, late Kris) Getz of Edinburg, Paige (husband, Zach) Meier of Springfield, Ellyn (husband, Tyler Jackson) Baker, of Springfield, and Abigail “Abby” (husband, Mauricio) Kuri, of Forest Park, IL.; Step granddaughter, Shen Wang, of Rochester; Great Grandchildren Karson and Keagan Getz, of Edinburg, and Remy and Olivia Jackson (step great granddaughter) of Springfield, Willow Kuri of Forest Park, IL.; nephew, Larry Workman of Medford, OR.; niece, Janice Melzer (husband, Will) Payton of Springfield, and several great nieces, nephews and cousins.

Private family graveside services will be held and burial will be at Edinburg Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family ask that memorial donations be given to the Edinburg United Methodist Church or to the Edinburg Athletic Association.
