Ralph Richard Powell, 86, of Springfield IL, passed away on Sunday November 10, 2019 at Lewis Memorial Christian Village. He was a beloved member of the South Side Christian Church and will be greatly missed by all. During his stay at Lewis Memorial Christian Village, he was loved by his nurses and aids.
He was born in Riverton IL, on January 19, 1933, the son of Ralph and Susie (Marsh) Powell.
Ralph served for 4 years in the United States Air Force and was part of the 301st Bomb Squadron. During his service he received the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Air Crew Member Badge.
He started his family with his wife Daisy Powell and they had many years together before she preceded him in death. Ralph would meet Judith Cook (Hughs) and the two were married. They had many wonderful years together as well.
Ralph loved the Lord and could always be seen at church as a volunteer greeter. He volunteered his time at the hospital as a member of the Red Coats. He always enjoyed cooking, gardening, painting, traveling and spending time with his family.
Ralph is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Daisy Powell; 2 sisters and 2 brothers.
He is survived by his wife, Judith Powell; his children, Carl Powell (wife, Amy), and Cindy Powell; grandchildren, Jessica Stephens (husband, Greg), Jeannette Blair (husband, Adam), Jeff Powell (wife, Clair), Nathaniel Brown (wife, Charlotte), Sarah Brown, and Kelsey Brown; 5 great grandchildren; step-children, Greg Giddings (wife, Sheri), David Giddings, and Stephen Cook (wife, Elizabeth); 8 step-grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews, and beloved friends.
The family is being taken care of by Ellinger-Kunz and Park Funeral Home and Cremation Service at 530 N. 5th St. Springfield IL, 62702.
There will be a graveside service on Friday November 15, 2019 at Camp Butler National Cemetery, 5063 Camp Butler Rd, Springfield, IL 62707 under the pavilion. Military honors will be observed at 11am with a memorial service to follow. Pastor Brooks Wilson will be officiating.
